My thoughts on peer pressure
So, what is peer pressure? The dictionary defines peer pressure as "social pressure by members of one's peer group to take a certain action, adopt certain values, or otherwise conform in order to be accepted". 82% of today's teenagers who have used tried an illegal drug were under the influence of peer pressure. With these statistics we can see that peer pressure is influencing today's teens into doing things they never would have done. I know for a fact, being affected by peer pressure myself, that it is not easy to resist the actions your friends are asking you to do. I believe that the easiest way to resist their requests is to just think to your self that what they are asking you to do is wrong and that they wouldn't be asking you this if they are true friends. True friends would not make you do these things if you didn't want to. You also have to keep in mind that teenagers naturally try to fit in because they are in a experiencing of their lives where they have trouble finding their own identity (identity crisis).
Peer pressure is not a very prominent issue in the novel but you can imagine that some things Barry does is related to peer pressure because he has to keep his reputation as the top dog.
